Salt Nomads Article: Mastering the art of freediving with Daniel Koval

In today’s busy world, people don’t often get the chance to stop, relax, and really soak in their surroundings. With our lives becoming more accustomed to a sensory overload of information to process almost everyday, we get rare chances to deprive those senses and reconnect with our mind and body at a primitive, yet natural level. As a way to express freedom, many have turned to the ocean for answers and freediving has become one of the most serene and natural ways possible to explore the depths of the ocean. With the right training freedivers are able to dive on one breathe to depths thought once impossible. This week we caught up with Daniel, an FII Freediving instructor based in Hawaii, he tells us about his life beneath the surface…

‘I have been in the water my whole life, but started freediving and spearfishing since I was 12 after my dad got me a 3 prong/ hawaiian sling for Christmas. For the last 4 years I have been teaching freediving full time in Hawaii, as the owner of Deep Freediving Instruction for FII (Freediving Instructors International).’

‘I have tried many other sports besides freediving but there is no other that compares, actually, I think of it as more of a martial art than a sport. For me I really enjoy the deep dives, When I dive it allows me to free myself from any mental and physical attachment. Cell phones, computers, cars, traffic, the world does not exist anymore and I feel ultimate freedom for the 3 minutes that I’m below. When you turn your mind off because you trust the sea and you completely let go of any and all tension you hold, it just feels natural and right to be down that deep…
